As a residential child care officer and I work for several agencies that provide care for Young People with challenging behaviours, learning difficulties and mental health issues.
Some are Young People who have been abused or who have no one to care for them, due to loss of a parent, leaving them orphaned; and some have parents who misuse substances and could be a danger to themselves or there children.
My job as a child care officer is to work along side the social services to provide the relevant care for the young person, to enable them to move on with their life and have a bright future in today’s society.
One of the first things that are put in place for the young person is a care plan. This enables us to work with the young person, addressing their needs, so that they have consistency and that all carers work towards the young persons needs and goals in the same way.
Due to the background of these Young People, there can be a lot of factors that can delay progress, however, our duty of care is always to put the Childs needs first and care for them, showing them why structure is important and very much needed, not just for now but for their future.
