ADHD: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a common childhood behavioural condition and can persist through adolescence and into adulthood.  Its characterised by:

  • Lack of concentration
  • Aggressiveness
  • Forgetfulness
  • Easily distracted
  • Not listening to instructions

Some foods seem to trigger 'out of control' behaviour for some people with ADHD, but so do excitement (eg. being at a party), and 'stimulating environments' such as supermarkets and noisy classrooms.

A complete assessment by a doctor should be made before trying any treatment.  Treating ADHD can be done through medical or behavioural therapies or a combination of the two.

ADHD can cause a lot of pressure on a family especially as it’s a difficult illness to deal with.  Many parents find it a struggle and extremely difficult to cope in such stressful circumstances, as this is due to the verbal, physical and mental abuse that parents often receive from their child.

If you or someone you know has ADHD – please share your experience with us so that other teenagers and parents can have a wider understanding of how it affects you at home, school, work and within your relationships.  Email us on writers@urspecial.comor call 0700 2222 700
