Kevin, the school prefect, walks in the school grounds and sees Tim, a pupil leaning against the wall. He looks straight ahead without blinking. He is in his own world. kevin approaches Tim.
“Hello Tim, what are you doing on your own? Are you ok?” Tim slowly looks up and shrugs his shoulders at kevin. He looks very unhappy. kevin sits next to Tim. “Has someone upset you? Is something is wrong.” Still no answer and a tear rolls down Tim’s face. “Maybe I'll tell you one of my jokes.” Says kevin. Tim wipes his eyes with his shirt sleeve. “What happens when 2 snails fight?” Tim looks up at kevin waiting for a response. “They Slug It Out.” “That’s terrible!” Says Tim with a weak smile. “Well you tell me one then?’ kevin retorts back. “Ok, why would no one use door knockers in Ancient Egypt? “Why?” Asks kevin. “Because all they had to do was Toot and Come In.” They both start laughing. “Ok that’s not a bad one. How about this one then.” Says kevin. “What’s green and goes red at a touch of a button?’ “What?” “Kermit the Frog in a Liquidiser” Tim puts his hand on his head, but he continues to laugh. “That’s worse than the first one.” “I haven’t laughed like this in ages.” kevin says. “Me too!” Adds Tim. “It’s nice to have a laugh with someone.” “Is that why you're unhappy?” kevin asks. “No one seems to like me and I find it hard to make friends. Maybe it’s my bad jokes.” kevin and Tim both start to laugh again. “How are you feeling now?” kevin asks Tim. “Right now, I feel alright.” “Better than you did 2 minutes ago?” “Yes.” “Why’s that then?” Tim pauses to think, but kevin interrupts. “Do you think it’s because we've just had a laugh?” “I guess so.” Says Tim. “When you're happy, good things come your way.” kevin says.
At that point a couple of girls walk towards the two. “You two, do you want to hear a really good joke?” “Yeah alright.” Replies one of the girls. kevin repeats his first joke. “I thought you said it was a good joke.” Says the girl, but they laugh. “I’ve got a good one.” Says the other girl. “Why didn’t the ghost go to the ball?” “Why?” Says the whole group. “Because he had NOBODY to go with.” “Ha ha ha” They all chime.
Eventually more boys and girls walk by and join the group to see what all the laughter is about. A lot more bad jokes are told followed by “ha ha ha’s” and “Ohhhss, that’s terrible.” kevin goes to leave the group, but before leaving whispers to Tim, “And I thought you didn’t have any friends.”
