London fashion week proved to be a great success as always and with it encouraged the bigger lady to strut their stuff down the catwalk with full confidence.  A good move as;

“The Royal College of Psychiatrists is calling on the media to stop promoting unhealthy body images and glamorising eating disorders.”

The media has bombarded us with images of the size zero figures such as Victoria Beckham, Paris Hilton etc, which look completely unhealthy and has the look of an undernourished skeleton. Louise Redknapp was involved in a documentary called ‘The Truth About Size Zero.’  She was set a goal to drop to a US dress ‘size zero’ in thirty days on an extreme crash diet and exercise.  The viewing was compelling but proved to have its toll on her as she felt weak, grumpy and unhappy.  This did not help her relationship with her family.

Images of women portrayed in advertising are often airbrushed to achieve a look of ‘perfection’. This is very misleading and can have a great affect on those with low self esteem who want to look and feel better about themselves.  This is the power of the media. The outcry this has caused has encouraged fashion magazines to act more responsibly but more can be done.

“The Royal College of Psychiatrists wants the next government to set up a forum which includes politicians, advertising agencies, magazine editors, relevant regulatory bodies and eating disorder experts to draw up a new ethical editorial code.”

Let’s hope that we see more models that are an average size and encourage teens to engage in healthy eating. But most importantly that they become happier within themselves as well as their appearance.
