If you or someone you know has ever had unprotected sex, there is a risk of catching a sexually transmitted infection and you must get checked out immediately.
There are GUM Clinics (Genito-Urinary Medicine) or STI Clinics (Sexually Transmitted Infection) which are ran by the NHS for young people all around England that are trained in dealing with all aspects of sexual health. So there’s no need to be embarrassed and like all medical centres - your sex life remains confidential.
In many of these clinics, you need not make an appointment as they operate a ‘walk-in’ service which is free and you don’t need to be referred by your GP.
When you go to a GUM Clinic you will be given an information sheet to fill out, this is so your information can be recorded confidentially for any future visits. They carry out a full range of tests including blood and pregnancy tests; you’ll then be confidentially phoned with the results but in order to collect your results and so that your information is not told to any one else you will have security question.
You will also be asked very personal questions, which require very honest answers, such as:
Though these questions may be embarrassing, you should remember that the doctors and advisers are not there to judge you, just to help and advice.
If you have an STD such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea and Syphilis these can be cleared up with antibiotics. Herpes and Genital Warts also require treatment but have a habit of returning. It is important to be aware that these infections can cause not only infertility but in some cases they can cause death!
Some young people are too embarrassed or maybe too ignorant to go and make sure that they aren’t carrying any STD’s. So please use protection, its safety for yourself and for others.
